XP Menus and a useful link

I hate XP themes. I hate skins. Things look good to me when they are neat, tidy, spiffy, but plain (note to self: do not make a joke here about this must be why i'm engaged to Jordie. I can't, she's not neat and tidy *grin*)

When I'm on an XP box, the first thing i do is turn off the damn blue squishy toy (I believe it's actually called the Luna theme). But there's one thing in there that's nice - the look of all menus are slightly different (and better), and I discovered a few months ago that i can get them back while sticking with windows classic look for everything else.

I was surfing around, looking at blogs and found this entry by Tony Schreiner. I had no idea what he was talking about, but i applied the reg hack anyway to see what he meant. I was happy :) I'm posting this link because of my recent reinstall - it took me a while to find this blog post again. This way i can find it again quickly in 12 months time :)

To sum up, however:

Classic Theme
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"UserPreferencesMask"=hex:90,32,05,80

Squishy Toy (what i want, for once)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"UserPreferencesMask"=hex:90,32,07,80

Don't whack the registry directly. Use the API. SystemParametersInfo(SPI_SETFLATMENU). For one thing the API doesn't require a logoff to take effect.
