You can all leave now

I thought I'd take Robert Scoble's message to heart (read it here) and see if his advice works.

So, all of you, leave me alone.

Go away. Leave now. Go somewhere else. I don't want you here.

(To further the message, here's some words i found via www.thesaurus.com)

Beat it, blow off, bolt, break, breeze, cut out, decamp, disappear, dog it, duck out, escape, fade, fade away, flee, get, go AWOL, go south, hightail, jump, lam, leave, make off, make scarce, powder, pull out, quit, run away, run off, scram, skedaddle, skip, skip out, slip away, sneak away, split, steal away, take off. vamoose.

I'd like to let Robert know if his theory worked. If you don't leave, please leave a comment, so I can tell him that it didn't work. If you did leave, please leave a comment so I can tell him it did.

Marvin K Mooney, Will You Please Leave Now!

I left a couple of times, but came back. Not sure if this counts...

I have to admit, it's kinda like eating a really nice dish of pasta in a new restaurant.

You simply have to come back for seconds. But when you come back the second time, it never tastes as nice.

I just discovered your site through Scoble's link. So you want people to leave? No problem, I'm leaving. In case you wonder why: I'm not leaving at your request, it's your crappy HTML that turns me away - your blog is close to unviewable with non-IE browsers. If you really want more readers: learn how to produce some valid HTML, that may help. I won't be using a piece of legacy software to read your content. So I just kind of "bounced".

Funny! Sort of an anti-reader strategy.

It DOES look sh**ty. You would do well to try to view it in Firefox or Opera...

Yeah yeah yeah, whinge on guys. I'm in the process of a) coming up with a look that i'm happy with and b) then making sure it works on all browsers. The hard part is a). Once the look is right, then it's easy to make it cross browser compatible. But i'm not a graphic designer, and making up something that looks pretty i really suck at. I'll get there, but it's a slow process.

My sincere apologies for having you arrive in the middle of a work in progress.

OK, rant over :)

Those of you who were kind enough not to complain, have you all noticed how it's the people that switch to 'non-mainstream' stuff that are the biggest complainers and whingers?

I know i'm opening myself up for attack here, but such is life. Firefox is getting big, i know that, but it's still small compared to IE users. :)

You have a slightly weird website: are the boxes to the left with links supposed to run over into the main text in your blog?

Heya Geoff,

Nah, your (borrowed) tactic didn't work, I'm still here a-readin'... ;)

I'm going to join the whingers though - hurry up and get your website working on all browsers! ;)

And while I concede that Firefox use is still relatively low, I would guess that it has a much greater percentage within the tech sector...which I would assume is your biggest reader demographic.

If I can help let me know.

Cheers,
Matt

Steve: nope. i'm getting there, be patient :)

Matty: i knew you'd whinge. i'm impressed you waited this long :P :)

Find me some spare time and i'll find you a nice looking page :)

Geoff: interesting you talk about "non-mainstream stuff".

1. HTML is mainstream, most of the entire web with a few exceptions renders correctly in standards compliant browsers. By definition, HTML is what the W3C says, not what MSFT thinks.

2. Non-mainstream? You are apparently a .NET guy. The mainstream is available at http://www.javasoft.com ;-)

2) you're funny. stupid, but funny :P

Ralph said:

Geoff: you mean that .NET has become mainstream, as in "market leader"? When did that happen?

BTW. do you always start to insult people when you run out of arguments? You're funny, too.
# November 29, 2004 3:45 AM

Geoff Appleby said:

Ralph: no, i've never said that .net is mainstream, or the market leader. .net is simply my preffered platform. vb is my preferred language. java is a very common language, sure, and what the the market leader is at the moment i have no idea.

in fact, i don't care who is. i write about what i'm interested, and there's not really that much more to it than that. i'm certainly not interested in in a language, platform, browser, or standards war.

every likes their own thing, if what i don't do isn't compatible with something you prefer, what's it to me? I'm certainly working on making my blog page more browser compatible, sure, but's only because i find making it compatible interesting, not because i care about whether it's pretty or not. and i certainly don't care if it looks the way you'd prefer it to, or if what i write about isn't interesting to you. the solution to that is simple - don't come here. If you _do_ find what i write about interesting, but it looks bad, then as i said before, be patient, i'm getting there slowly as time allows.

I don't start to insult people when i run out of arguments. i start with the insults much much earlier than that. if you take offence at that, then stop coming back and reading my blog :) seriously. I'm not out to offend anyone, and any insults i've used so far i don't consider insulting or offending, merely cheap crass humour, which is my basic personality through and through.

Normally it's directed at myself however :)

Ok, you wanted some humour, here we go:

Oh, sorry Geoff: I just saw all the VB code examples on your front page. I didn't mean to start a real discussion about valid HTML and all that, I didn't know you were doing, you know, VB.NET - ok, I... I'm leaving now, I am no longer feeling insulted because you called me stupid, because, you know, I... sorta feel your pain, I didn't want you to feel bad...

Stupid me, I thought you were using a real programming language, but...

On a serious note:
you have some interesting stuff on your page. Sometimes, I also have to use that VB stuff. So you seem to be a smart guy despite your poor choice of programming language ;-)

Geoff Appleby said:

Now you're starting to sound more and more like a slashdotter!!! Dude, you're doing well *grin*

Real discussions are good. Discussions that come about as a result of a flamebait aren't so hot :)

Language choices aside, come on, compliment me, I'll certainly make allowances for java noobs if you're going to stroke my ego even just a little.
