BlogJet Love

I thought it was finally time I posted my tribute to BlogJet.

Brendan managed to get all us bloggers at CodeBetter a BlogJet license, with many thanks whoever it was that gave it to us :)

I'd never used it before, and gave it a good workout to see what it's like.

I'm happy. It creates pretty decent HTML behind the scenes, which is the most important bit for me. It's easy to jump to the HTML to do a raw edit if you need to (Ctrl-Tab is a very important feature in many applications, in my book). It has other good important keyboard shortcuts, like Ctrl-Enter to post.

So thankyou to the guys at BlogJet, I'm a very happy camper.

Now, on to some feature requests :)

  • I crave screen real estate. Can I please have a version with small toolbar buttons?
  • You're spell checker is pretty lame :) Can I replace it with IESpell?
  • Ctrl-H to me is a much more meaningful keyboard shortcut (or even Ctrl-L) for Insert Hyperlink than Ctrl-K.
  • What's the Properties tab for? I'm guessing that against a .Text blog, I can't use it (all the controls on it are disabled). Can I close that tab so that I can happily Ctrl-Enter between HTML and Normal views without getting lost in the middle please?

And then there's the bugs that are not BlogJet's fault, but .Text's. I can't edit posts and I can't post entries that I don't want syndicated to the main feed. But that's ok, because my time in front of that damn FreeTextBox control has been greatly reduced, which is fantastic.

All in all, I'd give BlogJet a good 4 stars so out of 5. Highly Recommended!

Update: I'm looking at getting the Edit fixed implemented finally. I'll keep you all posted.

Update Two: This edit, and the one above, were both made via BlogJet. Sweeeet! Check my newer posts for what happened.

Something other than CTRL-K for Insert Hyperlink?
Upset anyone used to using CTRL-K in MS apps?

Don't think it's going to happen somehow ;) (unless they introduce the option to define your own hot keys)

Editing posts is a .Text problem. I've linked to info on the source for the fix here http://tamasii.com/blog/archive/2005/03/05/48827.aspx

I wish BlogJet would tell me that my post went up successfully. Right now it does nothing but clear the screen. No message that anything did or did not happen. I want that taken care of in the next version.

I love BlogJet too. I don't mind any of the things you requested changes for except the stupid spell checker. It seems to be a UK English dictionary, but a really bad one!

I think it does use ieSpell, or at least when I right click on a post, it gives me ieSpell's context menu

Colin: Ah, see, given the spec I could probably write Word for you from scratch. But Office? No idea how to use it. I did a quick test, and yes, ctrl-k is insert hyperlink in word. Wow :) So yes, customisable shortcut keys would be nice.

Chris: legend! I'm getting it now!

Raymond: yes - althought i've learned that if it says nothing and blanks the screen, then it worked :)

Matt, Brendan: You put me onto something there. It doesn't use ieSpell, however, because it's essentially a web control, some of the standard context menu items come through into the popup menu. if ieSpell is installed, you can invoke it via the context menu, and bypass the builtin one. Sweeet!

Update on ieSpell: no dice. It runs, and says it's complete immediately. No actual checking.

Bugger.

Does anyone know of any free alternatives to Blogjet? I'm on the verge of writing one...
