I Got A Cameo Role in MSDN Mag.
There's a couple of times a month or so when I can make predictions about what's going to be in my mail box when I get home. (Note: I said mail box, not inbox. You know, that thing outside your house with a slot in the front. Letters get put in there.)
The first is early in the month when our department receives it's monthly MSDN update discs. That means that when I get home, or in the next days mail, mine is going to arrive too. Occasionally I get mine first, but it's rare.
The second is when Rory gets his MSDN Magazine, Australia New Zealand edition, as he did today. Mine was sitting there out the front of my house for when I got home :)
The Oz version of the MSDN mag is an interesting little puppy. It has the most useful content from the US version in there, but is also injected with articles from local people - and missing out on the other US content doesn't matter, since we can read it online for free anyway. As I've got to know the Oz blogging community and made myself known, you pretty quickly get to know who the big names are - the ANZDPE's, the User Group leaders, the MVPs, etc. When I get my copy of the Oz MSDN mag, generally the first thing I do is have a flick through to see how many of the authors I know or at least know of (in almost all cases, I've either met them, subscribe to their blog, have had email dealings with them, or participated in the aus-dotnet mailing list with them. Many times, all of the above :)
This months was a pretty cool treat all round - articles from people like Greg Low, Nick Wienholt (and I presume his missus :) and Nick Randolph, all talented Aussies.
The coolest part was the article Nick Randolph wrote. I was mentioned by name! It's really no big thrill, especially when I'm surrounded at codebetter by all these other guys that written books and articles and stuff, and I'm still trying to find the time to do some writing too, but this is the first time I've seen my own name in print (besides the phone book, of course). I'm a little miffed (not really :) that while mentioning me, he didn't give a link to my blog, but I suppose that's to be expected given that he'd crammed the space he had available with as many words as possible and there was no room to add anything else - his bio photo was even put on the previous page to make room for it all.
To top it all off, in the remaining articles from the US version, both of codebetter's very own John Papa's articles made it through - including a link to code better (well, to his blog anyway)!
It's just a shame that it looks like it was rushed to the printers. There's typos abundant all through this issue, and instead of having both of John's articles, in my copy at least, I got the same article twice.
Oh well.
