Useful Life Tip #4

Update: Sorry guys, I honestly thought everyone would realise that this doesn't actually work. It's been long enough now, people have had their fun, so I think I need to make it explicitly clear (for the sake of Google and such). THIS ENTIRE ENTRY IS A JOKE. My apologies if you really ended up with a computer that won't boot, or wiped your hard drive with a Linux boot disk :)

Continuing the saga of useful life tips...actually, this one needs to be sub classed - it's more of a Useful Computer Geek Tip.

Useful Life Tip #4

Make your computer run faster by not wasting time on background work.

Kill off that pesky 'System Idle Process' process.

Perhaps I should explain. Bring up the task manager (one of my favourite shortcuts - Ctrl-Shift-Escape). Order the list by CPU Usage, with the highest at the top. If you have not much else running at the time, you'll see something like this:

Do you see that? There's some process chewing up 98% of my CPU! Every windows box has one of these little bastards running on their machine (XP/2003). This thing takes all the CPU cycles it can, wasting your precious computing power. I'm not sure why Microsoft included it, but there's no way it's going to be something useful.

The worst thing is, they've made it very hard to kill off. If you try to end the process, all you get is this message:

After a lot of research, I've worked out how to get rid of it and my computer runs so much faster now, it's unbelievable!

There's two stages to getting rid of this thing - it's not hard, just well hidden. They couldn't make it impossible to disable, or the 'Softies wouldn't be able to turn it off either. First, you need to go into your registry editor and find the key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Hacks' and the value called 'WasteCPU'. It will be set at 1 - change it to 0 (off).

Now that you've done that, go to your services control panel. Visible now in your list is the 'System Idle Process' service. Change it's start up type from 'Automatic' to 'Manual'.

Reboot your computer, and watch it haul ass!

Very intriguing. System Idle Process is not supposed to make much of a diff. Anyway, I think you are on an XP box. 2003 does not have those registry keys, but I'd be curious to test drive the difference myself.

You are ONE SICK MOTHER... I LOVE it!

I'll have to admit...good artwork! If it weren't for the one mispelled registry value name, it would be a perfect lure for those infected with "system mod disease".

You should really submit it as a tuning tip to www.rootkit.com to see how many'll blindly open their regsitry editor and exclaim "where are the hacks?!?!?!" (Or is that where you found this gem?) ((Actually, if you DO submit it to rootkit, you'd better do it anonymously, or you'd better have a REAL GOOD firewall! The "good will" this will generate will garner more attention than you'd like...))

Geoff, this looks pretty sweet, is there any side effect of not having that process running?

Steve: No way am I submitting this anywhere - I'm just spending the night wired on coffee, and thought I'd have a little fun.

And thanks for pointing out the typo - I didn't see it. Fixed!!

Sorry Sahil, I guess I should have actually said that I've only tested this on XP Pro. 2003 is a Server product, so things probably work a little bit differently. Try going into the 'Manage Your Server' applet and installing the 'Don't be a slow ass server' role. :)

I am running XP Pro 2002 SP2 and I do not have the entry in the registry or the service. So I am assuming this hack works for a version of XP prior to what I have.

I'm having trouble -- I know they say not to mess with the registry if you don't know what you're doing, but alas I tried to change that RandomFailures value to Never and now my computer won't start back up. I suppose its my own fault though -- afterall, when you think about it, the very definition of never having random failures would be a computer that didn't start up in the first place.

The System Idle Process is not a process, more a counter which is displayed in WinTasks used for measuring how much idle time the CPU is having at any particular time. This counter will display how much CPU Resources, as a percentage are 'idle' and available for use.So i don't think that ending that will speed up your computer.

Aglar: Spoilsport! Now we won't get to see Sahil's testing results! (Sahil: Remember to include a comparison against the latest Longhorn build... Rumor has it Longhorn will also have a "Managed System Idle Process" that'll reflect the idle time of the garbage collector, but I haven't verified that yet...)

LOL Steve, check this out from my initial comment "Very intriguing. System Idle Process is not supposed to make much of a diff:"

I was smart enough to google a bit after that :), frankly this whole post smelt fishier than an anchovy's ***.

Steve: It's disgusting isn't it? Guilt started getting to me. I really honestly truly thought that it was obvious that I was just making this up for a laugh. But enough people have been suckered into thinking that this is real that...well, I think that the 'help' with the linux boot disk might have been going a bit far :)

Useful Tip #5, you're a fucking ***.

Posting a Fake Tip On Windows that some idiots will actually believe. Ok, you must have been bored.

However the follow up comment, where you write some instructions on how to boot a linux floppy, and mount and then systematically delete your entire windows partition, just highlights your tard level.

You know someone _will_ follow those instructions, because they googled for "Windows Won't Boot" or some sort of *** like that, find your instructions, and follow your commands juditiosly. Little do they know they just lost their entire lifes work (But they do backups right?)

I think as simple duty of care, you should remove the helpful comment on using linux boot disks as rescue floppies, before you really *** someone over. You slapper.

Umm..I can't actually understand the text there (of course, i'm only an english speaker). You _did_ make sure people know it's a joke, didn't you? Some people really thought it was legitimate post, and I don't want them hurting their machines :)
