Domain Names. Buh?
For all my geekiness, there's some things I know very little about.
I know, I know, it's a bi tof a surprise, but it's true. Really.
Domain name registering. I really have very little idea about them. I know how DNS works, and stuff like that, but actually buying a domain name, and getting it pointed at where it needs to point at and all that? No idea. It's actually more trouble than it's worth here in Australia - to get a .com.au address, you have to prove you have a business and the name must be similar to the business name. .net.au is supposed to only be available for things like service providers. .org.au for non-profit organisations. And they cost a packet.
But let's move into a world where there's no .au on the end. Then things change a lot - you buy a domain name from the states and it costs you very little money. And I'd like to do this sometime soon. A quick search on google brings up many places where I could purchase a domain name, and the one I want is available.
But what do I do then? I pay some money (very little compared to aussie prices) and then what? Currently I have no actual server to attach it to (paying out the bucks for hosting can wait) but I'd like to at least have the name registered, and look at getting it to just redirect somewhere else (like, say, my blog :) - I know it can be done, since Darrell does it himself (http://www.darrellnorton.com redirects to his blog here).
But how? What do I do? Can anyone point me at the right info?
