Unclean! Begone! Reinstall thine boxen!
So, as we all know, VS2005 shipped less than 24 hours ago. I've queued all the bits (VS, SQL, VSTO, Visio...) for download before I left for work this morning, knowing that I'd be able to play tonight.
I did well. I only called my wife once through the day to see how the downloads were going :)
So I got home and burnt VS and SQL off to DVDs straight away. After dinner, I looked at what I needed to do to get them installed.
I like my machines clean. Sure, I'm happy to install all the CTPs and Betas, but when we get RTM, there's no way I really trust the uninstallers (as the MS guys have even said), so I know that a reinstall is on the cards in the next couple days somewhere. I've been expecting this for months now.
But I want to play. This is my right as a geek. So at least for a little while, I'm happy to play with an untrustworthy build. Time to get the uninstall tool. Using the advice given by Dan Fernandez as a guide, I grabbed the highly unsupported uninstall tool and ran it over my system.
Many uninstaller runs later, it says it's done. I start the VS install. After customising what I want installed, it has a look at dependancies and tells me I already have MSXML6, so it's leaving that out, and moves stright to the actual 2.0 framework install.

No good. I sent a crash report off to Microsoft like a good boy, and exited out. Then I uninstalled MSXML6 and ran the VS install again.

Same problem. I thought maybe there was a reboot needed after all the uninstalls. I reboot and run the install again.

Crap. My system is unclean. I need to banish it of its diseases. Time to reinstall my OS before I can play :(
The biggest problem? My ISP give me 10 gig a month download quota. Downloading SQL and VS pushed me over my monthly limit. I might need to wait until tuesday (a new month) before I do the reinstall (windowsupdate is very necessary).
Bum. Oh well. Enjoy playing everyone, I'll catch up with you all next week!

You might recall I was watching the MSDN site closely last night, hoping that VS was on the way. All I can say is that I swear never to sleep again. I missed out on the scoop (and, more importantly, the 4 hours download time) because I fell asleep.
I had a cunning plan. Sam is the new baby in the house. Every night she goes to bed at about 7.30 or 8. Every night at about 3 she wakes up and wants a bottle. When I went to bed I didn't want to so lame ass that I set my alarm for a couple of hours away, and here was a perfect way out of it - a baby screaming would wake me up, and I'd innocently go check then while waiting for the bottle to warm up in the microwave.
Wouldn't you know it, she didn't wake up until 6.30 this morning? I swear, women are born being contrary.
Oh, and as for the oath I took 3 paragraphs ago. I think I lied.
