Inherits Microsoft.VisualBasic.MVP : Implements IBrainFart
Finally Giving It A Whirl

I've been manfully trying to resist giving Windows Live Writer a try. I don't know why, but I just didn't want to see if it was even any good - probably because I haven't liked any other client I've tried.

But to be fair - it's actually not too bad.

The real test is to see how the HTML it produces looks - it better not be dodgy FrontPage code :)

I also need to check if it honours inline styles.

You might as well consider this a test post :)

Probably the thing that annoys me most is that the shortcuts to switch to HTML view suck - F12 to see the HTML, ctrl-F11 to get back to web view? Who thought of that? I'd much prefer ctrl-tab to switch between them.

The other problem I have is images. When you insert an image, it browses the local machine - so how then does it get uploaded to the web server? I think I see a plugin coming :) (Or research into either how to do it or find someone elses).

But overall? I think I might give it a go for a while. It might save me making most of the fixes that I mentioned this morning.

OK, here goes...I'm clicking the publish button...

even if you like live writer you'll have to do some fixes on CS cos I like CS still and am only just getting used to using that. Not ready for another change just yet.

Hi Geoff, regarding the uploading of images... LiveWriter can either be configured to upload to an FTP server or directly to your blog if it implements the newMediaObject API:

Hey Darren,

Yeah - I discovered this after the fact :) But I don't like using FTP for it, and CS doesn't support the newmediaobject api.

I've alreayd learned how to write plugins for writer - so first I'm going to write a plugin that lets me easily upload misc files, then I'm going to follow that up with looking into that api :)

Thanks for the reference url - it'll come in handy!

Good idea about the Ctrl-Tab to switch between views, though I'm getting used to F11 and F12.  Robert McLaws released a CSModule with newmediaobject support.  You need to subscribe to the Community Server Daily News, buddy!  Here's the issue Robert's mod was listed in. 5th item down.

Hey! Of course I'm subscribed to the daily news! I just sorta gloss over the bits I'm not interested in at the time :)  And at the time, I wasn't interested in anything to do with Live writer.

But now - yeah, I'm giving it a good go, and I don't have _too_ much to complain about :) I did discover that Robert had done that since I wrote this post, and am going to look into using it sometime this week.

And yes Dave, I'll make sure I let you know how it goes!
