Things To Do In Melbourne

I'm stuck in this crowded, too-hot-or-too-cold city for the next 6-8 weeks. I'm going home for the weekend, but Monday - Thursday nights are available. While I certainly don't want to live here permanently, I do want to take the chance to catchup with people and go to things I normally can't get to.

This week I think I'll take quietly just staying in and catching up with my parents and my big sister and getting a feel for the city. I think after a week of catching public transport every day I might even be confident enough to get off at some other train station than the two I'll be using each day.

So from next week it'll be time to find things to do. So far my list has five items on it:

  • I've really got to meet up with MattyT so that I can teach him the goodness that is VB.
  • Where would we be without our local DPE? (Hey, that rhymes). I know this is Dave Lemphers' home turf, probably others too. Must catch up. Hmm...I wonder if Dave is interested in drinking competition? :)
  • User groups. I know the Canberra user group (I go there occasionally), but I don't know the Melbourne one - there's probably a lot of people who I know (virtually, in some manner) that I've never met - might go along. Hey, if you read this and you go to a Melbourne .net user group - if you see me, come up and say hi. I'll certainly have no idea who you are until yo introduce yourself :)
  • Readify. Melbourne is Readify's home base, so I really should stop by the office once in a while and say hi.

Probably the most important one to go on this list thought is flake.

  • Flake. FLAKE!!! In Canberra we have fish and chip shops, but we can't get flake from them. Flake is the only thing that makes me want to live in Victoria. Flaked Out is a takeaway that's on Centre Road (in Bentlieigh). they make the best flake I've ever had. I'll be there often :)

Anyone got anything else to add to my list? Remember, it's got to be on a weeknight, and it's got to be more interesting than sitting around writing code :)

Dude, if you think Melbourne is too hot/too cold you really need to drop my our little corner of the world.  We (Edmonton Alberta Canada) are at 53°34′ N 113°31′ W while Melbourne is at 37°49′ S 144°58′ E.  We may not reach the extreme high temps that Melbourne has (I've seen this first hand in both cities), but you don't want to come near to us on the spread.  As an example, this summer we hit 32 Celsius and this winter we will most certainly hit -32 Celsius (most likely we'll get lower than -40 Celsius).

Enjoy Melbourne and it's weather.  It's a beautiful city and a stellar climate.  I truely do envy you.

Hey man,

Your weather sounds awesome :) I live in canberra because the winters are cold and the summers aren't humid. Melbourne gets winters that are wet and summers that are so damn humid that it's still 30 degrees at night.

The only reason that I don't live anywhere colder than canberra is that i'm not really that into snow *grin*

I know, Melbourne's not really a bad place. It's just when you compare it to canberra.....

....Melbourne comes out way in front?

I should stop that.  There's nothing wrong with Canberra, it's a nice, boring, drab little city.  ;)  OK, I'll admit that I'm a *smidge* biased.  I love Melbourne.

I should really head back up to Canberra, maybe it's changed since I was twelve!  I do remember the science and technology centre being damn cool though.

But I'm keen to hook up - maybe we can "do lunch"?  I'd love to hear you rant about code, even if it has to be VB.

I'm amount 10 mins away from the city (in Kensington) so I'm pretty flexible.

Have you ever played Centurion Geoffa? Mitch is in town too...perhaps we grab some shot glasses, a few slabs, and get toasted...nicely toasted!

No idea what Centurion is. I remember a cartoon from when I was in primary school called Centurions - is that close :)

I don't care though. You're on!

Next week will be fine.  You've got my email I think?  Matt dot Trentini at gmail.  Shoot me an email when you'd like to meet.

As for Centurion (also known as "Power Hour"), Wikipedia gives a good description:

Sweet dude - i'll mail you and sort it out. And thanks for the link.

Davo - we've gotta do this :)  I don't claim to be able to last the hour however, i'm way out of practice with my alcohol intake.

Hey Geoff - I see where the "cranky" part comes from: "...I'm stuck in this crowded, too-hot-or-too-cold city for the next 6-8 weeks..."

Hey, that's my home you're talking about there!

Welcome to Melbourne mate :-)

Cheers,

Thomas

Hey Geoff, I live about 40 minutes out of town, near Frankston. I was planning on going to next week's SQL Server User Group meeting on Tuesday (http://www.sqlserver.org.au/Events/RegisterMeeting.aspx?EventId=215) - maybe we could catch up at some stage?

Cheers,

Thomas
